Learning to read means first to establish connections between the internal images of letters, words and sounds. After learning the alphabet code, the work is not over, another phase of learning has to happen. We have to set up an inner lexicon of written words forms. In English, lexicon is huge, because many spellings are unique. You teach the child that adding

" C-A-T " you obtain the word cat; the child then tries to find the cat's tile, then the mouth and the ears but he will just be disappointed.
